Andrew Spier, Vice President of Advanced Cyber Solutions and Commercial Services at Core4ce Recent and high-profile cyber, ransomware and supply chain attacks on Kaiser Permanente, Ascension, and Change Healthcare have shown how the healthcare industry remains the number one target , and that no organization is immune.
UnitedHealth Group CEO Andrew Witty testified on May 1 before both the House and Senate about the seismic February 21 cyberattack of UHG subsidiary Change Healthcare, which was infiltrated by the ALPHV ransomware gang. The particular ransomware attack made prime and backups inoperable.
WHY IT MATTERS UnitedHealth Group, Optum's parent company, reported more than $1 billion in net losses during the first quarter – which included impacts from the February 21 Change Healthcare ransomware attack and subsequent paymentsystems outage.
The plaintiffs in the Change Healthcare class action lawsuit also include providers who allege that paymentsystems were unavailable due to the data breach. As a result, the providers could not submit insurance claims and receive payments. Change allegedly forked over 350 bitcoins – roughly 22 million dollars.
The ransomware strike caused a chain reaction among healthcare providers, where paymentsystems were disrupted, cash flow halted, and—worst of all—patient safety was put in jeopardy. This is why ransomware attacks are so common in the healthcare sector.
Ransomware and Social Engineering Social engineering attacks occur when a cybercriminal manipulates authorized healthcare staff into wrongfully disclosing PHI. In some cases, social engineering can be used as an avenue for ransomware and malware attacks.
It is also claimed that card on file payments builds trust between practices and patients and contributes towards patient retention. #7 7 HIPAA Compliant Messaging Online patient scheduling and paymentsystems do not only have to be used for patient scheduling and payments.
It has been more than 5 weeks since Change Healthcare suffered a Blackcat ransomware attack. The attack forced Change Healthcare to take more than 100 systems and services offline, and those systems have remained offline for several weeks. While around 20 services have now resumed, more than 100 are still offline.
