by Stephen Wood In an era where health care inequities already burden marginalized populations, the bankruptcy of Steward Health Care culminating in the closure of several hospitals in Massachusetts, represents an unconscionable ethical failure. As these hospitals prepare to shut their doors, the communities they serve — comprising many uninsured, underinsured, and socioeconomically disadvantaged individuals — are left abandoned.
The desire for healthcare data has never been greater. This is true for healthcare organizations that want legitimate access to data. Hackers that want to breach healthcare data. Startups that want appropriate access to data and some who want to push the envelope of what data should be shared. Patients who want access to their health data. And everything in between.
Just 21.1% of hospitals are in full compliance with federal price transparency rules, according to Patient Rights Advocate. Compliance has been backsliding since July 2023.
According to a review by the Center for Bioethics and Health Law , patients who received early palliative care not only experienced significant improvements in their quality of life and mood but also lived 25% longer.
